A poor man and his grandson are forced to sell their last possession, a donkey. As they walk to the market, various strangers mock them--first for walking when then could ride, then for the grandson riding while the older man walks, then for both riding and over working the donkey. They finally enter the marketplace carrying the donkey, causing such a commotion that the donkey runs away before they even have a chance to sell him. In this retelling of the traditional fable, a kind but simple man and his grandson, on their way to market with their donkey, find it impossible to please everyone they meet.
