The key criteria for choosing a recipient for this award is the candidate's sensitivity to varying requirements of different stories. Therefore, this award is given to an artist of children's books who has demonstrated his/her willingness to experiment with different styles of media and illustration.

Presented to a living author and illustrator whose complete works have made a lasting contribution to children's literature. The Hans Christian Andersen Award is the highest international recognition given to an author and an illustrator of children's books.
