Tsunami! is the unforgettable story of a simple
sacrifice which saves hundreds of lives. In a village in ancient Japan,a boy
named Tada helps his grandfather, Ojisan, in the rice fields. When Ojisan
realizes a tsunami is coming, he orders Tada to burn the fields to warn the
village of the coming disaster. Young’s
impressionistic collages of hand-painted papers, fabric, and organic material
serve to heighten the drama of the story. His unforgettable depictions
of an earthquake, a tidal wave, and burning rice fields are alive with color
and texture. “A visually powerful and dramatic tribute to one man's willingness
to sacrifice everything for others,” wrote Kirkus in a starred review.
