Ten years ago, a mere stranger to China at large, I was working on a book called “Moon Bear”, which brought me to China to rid toxins found from the bear. I met Ms. Jing who told me her plan to study art in the U.S. and whether we could meet. From her I was introduced to Poplar publishingwhich resulted in my Book Tour of three cities last December.

While in Shanghai, my host, Ms. Zhang Hong graced me to revisit my distant past; she is, again, graciously standing in my place to receive your surprising award. Deeply humbled by this recognition, I thank you.

As all great events often begins with forgotten insignificant unrecognizable everyday deeds, perhaps with this minute, you will allow me to share what exhortations that brought me here from a longer past for those who are in the beginning of their journeys.

My journey came in three’s.
I am constantly reminded of
The three that can’t be held back: Time, Youth, Life
The three to be in check: Anger, Arrogance, Stinginess
The three one must retain: Curiosity, Innocence, Hope
The three most priceless: Love, Goodness, Friendship
The three that make us human: Time from Heaven, Place from Earth, Good Will from Man
The three primary conditions: Sincerity, Honor, Selflessness
The three most valuables: Parents, Children, Associates
The three goals in life: Purpose, Method, Self Improvement
The three we must manage: Life, Opportunity, Family
The three for a happy life: Be one’s best effort, Good cheer, Helpful to another
The three mottos for a book-maker: Let each book Be Timeless, Boundaryless, Scopeless

⼗年前，我因为创作《月熊》这本书造访我的故乡中国，当时⼤部分中国读者还不认识我。那次旅⾏我遇到正打算来美国深造艺术的金小姐，通过她，我又结识了蒲蒲兰——蒲蒲兰去年12月组织了我在国内三个城市的新书之旅。在故乡上海，张弘女士陪我重访往昔。今天，她又代表我站在这里领受这个惊喜的奖项。对于这份荣誉我诚惶诚恐，深表谢忱。

 

许多宏大事件往往源于日常生活中微不足道的小事——甚至这分钟正在发生的小事——容我与您分享我是如何从过往走到今天。也许我的分享能对刚起步的新进创作者有些益处。

 

在我的旅程里，“三”是个关键。我对以下的这些“三”念兹在兹：

 

最难挽留的“三”：光阴，青春，生命

最要避忌的“三”：愤怒，傲慢，吝啬

最需葆有的“三”：好奇， 天真，希望

最无价的“三”：仁爱，美善，友谊

生而为人最重要的“三”：上天厚赐的时间，地土给予的位置，人世间流淌的善意

最基础的“三”：真诚，声誉，无私

最珍贵的“三”：父母，子孙，伴侣

人生最重要的“三”个达到：目标、方法、自我修炼

最需努力的“三”：生命，机遇，家庭

快乐一生的“三”要件：善尽本分，积极正向，乐于助人

创作每本书的“三”句箴言：上下古今，纵横高广，影响深远。
